Imagine walking on a 375 million year old ocean floor! This glimpse into Iowa's geologic past was first exposed during the Floods of 1993 at Coralville Lake, then again more were exposed during the Floods of 2008. The fossils and limestone bedrock of the Devonian Fossil Gorge date back almost 200 million years before the dinosaurs!
The Welcome to Devonian Fossil Gorge - A Window into Iowa's Geologic Past brochure is located at the entrance to the fossil area with detailed information. The markers listed in the brochure have all been destroyed by the Floods of 2008, but the information in the brochure is still accurate. More brochures are available at the Visitor Center on the East Side of the Dam.
The brochure, Welcome to Devonian Fossil Gorge, is available showing the markers on the gorge area. This file is in a pdf format. If anyone would like to have the brochure sent by mail, just send an e-mail request to Kathy Atkinson or call (319)338-3543 ext. 6300.
Please keep in mind that the removal of, or damage to the fossils is strictly prohibited and subject to a fine. If you see anyone destroying fossils please notify a park ranger immediately or contact the administration office at (319) 338-3543 ext. 6300 or ext. 6301.
