The removal of 890 cubic yards of limestone from the navigation channel on the Mississippi River near Thebes, Ill., began Dec. 17, 2012. This is just one phase of the action the Corps is taking to improve the navigation channel for the river industry.

One of many rocks removed from the Middle Mississippi River during the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District's rock removal efforts near Thebes, Ill. The removal work will effectively lower the river bed by about two feet on or about January 11. The District hired two contractors in December to expeditiously excavate, and blast, the pinnacles of river rock that were impeding barge traffic.

Fifteen common fish species of the Mississippi River now cover the walls of the Mississippi River Visitor Center near Locks and Dam 15. The fish were created by the Benton FFA Chapter in Benton, Penn., for the display.
