Lake Red Rock Volunteers Receive National Award

Chester and Phyllis Briggs, Newton residents and long-time Lake Red Rock volunteers, are two of this year's national recipients of the Enduring Service Volunteer Award. They will receive the award at 10:00 am on Thursday, September 28 at the Bass Pro Shops in Altoona, Iowa. The Corps Foundation established the award in January 2016 to honor long term service and outstanding accomplishments by individuals and families of volunteers at US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) lakes and waterways. Corps to Host Several Public Open House Events for Des Moines River Water Control Plan Update

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District is hosting four public open house events to seek input on updating the Des Moines River Regulation Manual which includes the Water Control Manual for Saylorville Lake and Red Rock Lake. Proposed updates to the Manual will be discussed during the meetings and District staff will be on hand to answer questions and discuss comments, questions and/or concerns regarding the Water Control Plan update. Reservable Campsites to Increase at Lake Red Rock in 2017

The popularity of the campsite reservation program at Lake Red Rock has grown significantly in recent years. In response to demand, the Corps of Engineers will expand the program in 2017. Deadline for applications for Wheelin' Sportsmen Turkey Hunt Extended to April 1.

The deadline for applications for the Wheelin' Sportsmen Turkey Hunt has been extended to April 1. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers along with the Red Rock Lake Association and the Mahaska Fan Club Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) will be hosting its first annual Lake Red Rock Wheelin’ Sportsmen Turkey Hunt on April 23rd 2016. The hunt will pair disabled individuals with volunteer guides from the NWTF in hopes of bagging a turkey and having a great time in the outdoors. [Read More]

Panel of experts commends work at Red Rock Hydroelectric Project

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – An Independent Expert Peer Review Panel (IEPR) praised the work and diligence of the engineers, contractors, and Missouri River Energy Services (MRES) following an onsite review of the Red Rock Hydroelectric Project site June 20 – July 1. Intermittent road restrictions continue as hydro project progresses

The mild weather this week has allowed crews at the Red Rock Dam to continue working day and night to prepare the site for construction of a powerhouse and intake structure that will comprise the Red Rock Hydroelectric Project (RRHP). Short-term road closures, directed by the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, will occur in the overnight hours every three to four days as crews move large rebar cages from the North Tailwater staging area to the construction area on the upstream side of the Dam. In addition, Highway T-15 will be restricted to one lane every three to four days to facilitate staging of the concrete trucks to ensure worker and public safety as the wall element sections are poured. Downstream work prepares for RRHP powerhouse construction

Construction continues at the Red Rock Dam where Missouri River Energy Services (MRES) will construct a new hydroelectric power plant. Much of the construction work being done is in preparation for construction of the powerhouse, which is expected to begin in summer 2015. On the downstream side of the Red Rock Dam, the construction of the cofferdam, which is located between the Des Moines River and the power plant site, is well underway. The construction of Cells #1 and #2 are largely complete, Cell #3 is being filled with sand, and the walls of Cell #4 are being installed. [Read More]
