Lock & Dam 16 Recreation Area

Illinois City, IL

Lock & Dam 16 is a great place to view wildlife on the river such as Bald Eagles in the winter and Double-crested Cormorants, White Pelicans, ducks, and Great-blue Herons in the summer.  It’s also a wonderful way to get close to the action of a towboat and its barges locking through.

Lock & Dam 16 has an observation deck and picnic tables open year around from 8 am to midnight every day.  It is located across the Mississippi River from Muscatine, Iowa in Illinois City, Illinois.  Beginning April 1st and going through October 31st, public restroom facilities are available.

Lock & Dam 16 tours are provided free of charge every Sunday at 2 pm beginning Memorial Day weekend and ending Labor Day weekend.
