Pelican Festival – First Time at Coralville Lake
Pelicans in Iowa? At Coralville Lake? You bet! Thousands of American White Pelicans make their annual migration right through the state of Iowa, and Coralville Lake is a favorite rest stop along their more than 1000-mile journey.
Bring
your family and friends to the DNR's Hawkeye Wildlife Area on Amana Road,
Swisher, Iowa (just west of Iowa Highway 965) for Iowa's annual PELICAN FESTIVAL.
This event celebrates the great migration of this intriguing bird. For
the first time this year, the festival is moving to the Iowa City area and
is co-sponsored by Iowa Audubon, Iowa DNR, the US Army Corps of Engineers,
McBride Raptor Center, Iowa City Bird Club and Johnson County Conservation
Board. Come and see pelicans through high-powered spotting scopes staffed
by local bird experts. Other activities include booths and exhibits
by many conservation and civic groups, free pelican tattoos (non-permanent),
special presentations about pelicans, birds of prey and other bird topics,
face painting and more.
Following the Pelican Festival activities earlier in the day, the Iowa Audubon will conduct its annual fundraising event, The Pelican Gala, including a large selection of appetizers, beverages and desserts, entertainment by John Stravers and his band Big Blue Sky, a silent auction and door prizes. Ticket prices include a year's membership in Iowa Audubon and the satisfaction that funds raised will be used to further the cause of bird conservation and education in Iowa.
