The Muscatine Island Levee System protects 30,000 acres of commercial, industrial, agricultural and residential land. The total length of the levee is 14.2 miles. The levee system has two different heights to account for superiority of urban area but overtopping of rural portion results in flooding of urban area since project is an island.
The northern quarter of the levee system was improved in 2002, the level of protection for this reach exceeds the 0.2% annual chance (500 year) plus three feet of freeboard. The level of protection for the southern three quarters of the system is 1.0% annual chance (100 year) with three feet of freeboard.
Project was selected as an FY17 new start project. Federal Interest Determination was completed and approved in September 2017. Feasibility Cost Sharing Agreement was signed May 2018. Project will be terminated in 2019 due to BCR well under 1.0.
