Pekin Lake SFWA is located along the Illinois River immediately downstream of Peoria Lock and Dam and adjacent to and west of the community of Pekin, Illinois.

The project area south of the Ameren CILCO causeway was once deepwater fish overwintering habitat that has been degraded by excess sedimentation from the Illinois River. Further, the diversion of Lake Michigan water and creation of the navigation pools has eliminate much of the topographic diversity that had produced large areas of mast producing trees. The Southern Unit project is intended to address the lack of overwintering fish habitat and declines in diverse bottomland forest areas. The need for overwintering fish habitat in this reach of the Illinois River is acute. No existing overwintering habitat exists within approximately twenty miles of Pekin Lake SFWA. Further, higher water levels throughout the system have nearly eliminated mast producing hardwood forest in the Illinois Floodplain.

The project features included dredging deep channels into Soldwedel Lake and Lake of the Woods from Illinois River with additional dredging of fingers, shelves, and deep holes in Lake of the Woods and Soldwedel Lake. These project features when completed shall have 45.7 acres of dredging with 42.8 acres of onsite placement of Mast trees and wetland restoration.

The State of Illinois owns all of the property. The State of Illinois would serve as the sponsor for this project. The State's real estate interest will satisfy a portion of their 35% cost share.

The Final Feasibility Report with Integrated Environmental Assessment was approved in April 2011. Development of Plans and Specification are on hold pending Federal Construction funding. The Project Partnership Agreement will be executed prior to contract solicitation and award.
