NATURAL TRAP CAVE, AN ICE AGE TREASURE TROVE: In 2014 a team led by Julie Meachen of Des Moines
University and Alan Cooper of the Australian Centre for Ancient DNA at the
University of Adelaide, re-opened the Natural Trap Cave in Wyoming with
the goal of extracting ancient DNA from the mammal fossils and
exploring faunal changes in the light of climate change over the last Ice
Age and into the present. Over the last two field seasons the team has
collected not only large mammal fossils but also large quantities of
microfauna fossils (lizards, snakes, fish, frogs, birds, rodents,
bats, and other small mammals) which can give us information on climate
change at NTC through time.
