Ongoing habitat enhancement projects at Lake Red Rock continually improving fishing conditions. The most recent project, completed in Fall 2025, involved the placement of approximately 800 MossBack fish habitat structures throughout the lake.
This project was made possible through a grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to the Red Rock Lake Association, coupled with generous matching donations from the Vermeer Charitable Foundation, the Pella Rolscreen Foundation, and the Peter H. & Eunice Gaass Kuyper Foundation. These funds allowed for the purchase and installation of a significant number of structures.
MossBack structures create valuable habitat for a variety of fish species. Some designs attract baitfish and aquatic insects, forming the base of the food chain. Others provide protective cover for larger fish like crappie and bass, improving their hunting success. Each marked 'MossBack' location features a diverse mix of these structures to support a healthy and thriving fish population.
A map detailing the locations of these structures – from this project and previous enhancements – is available below. You can also find a QR code linking to the map at USACE parking fee stations around the lake or click HERE to view the map in full-screen mode.
