Mooring cell on the Illinois Waterway

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, issues a reminder to all recreational boaters regarding the restricted use of mooring cells along the Illinois Waterway. These large, circular concrete structures, located near each lock and dam, are essential for commercial navigation and are not intended for recreational activities.

Mooring cells play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of commercial vessels. To maintain safety for everyone on the waterway, we ask that boaters refrain from anchoring near or recreating on these structures. Doing so can create navigational challenges for commercial traffic and potentially put individuals at risk. Boaters who do not adhere to these guidelines may be subject to fines.

For more information on safe boating practices and recreational facilities, please contact the Illinois Waterway Visitor Center at 815-667-4054.
