Corps to host scoping meeting for Lake Red Rock, Hickory Ridge Project

Published Feb. 23, 2010

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- Come be a part of creating a new attraction at Lake Red Rock.  On March 10, 2010, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, and the Lake Red Rock Association will host a public scoping meeting for the Hickory Ridge Project.  The meeting will be held at the Lake Red Rock Project office, 1105 Highway T-15, Knoxville, Iowa, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The meeting will involve a short presentation by the Corps of Engineers and Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation focusing on the plans to restore Hickory Ridge.  Attendees will break into small facilitated groups to generate ideas to refine the plan for the area, determine future public uses and appropriate facility development as a wilderness camp.

The former timeshare campground, now owned by the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, will be transferred to the Corps for management once fundraising for the project is complete.  Hickory Ridge will be open for public use upon transfer to the Corps.  A rich plant community, including mature oak and hickory trees, covers the 47 acre site above the lake.  Be a part of bringing this area to life for use by paddlers, families, Scouts, and others.

An invitation has been sent to paddling groups, campers, outdoor recreation organizations, involved federal and state agencies, local businesses, and elected representatives.  Influence the future of this area with your attendance.
