ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The US Army Corps of Engineers - Rock Island District and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources awarded a contract for the Peoria Riverfront Development, Illinois (Ecosystem Restoration) Upper Mid-sized Island Critical Restoration Project, Stage II.

The contract, awarded March 25 to Midwest Foundation Corporation of Tremont, Ill. for $3,815,600, uses funding provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and from the State of Illinois.  This project will dredge a total of 38 acres to varying depths and place the material on the inside of the geotextile containers that were constructed in Stage I.

The purpose of this project is to restore deep-water fisheries habitat that has been lost in Lower Peoria Lake due to sedimentation.  Construction of Stage II will begin after completion of Stage I, estimated to be Aug. 1.  The dredging and island construction will take place immediately north of the McClugage Bridge.  Future projects may dredge additional areas in the backwater area.
