Cedar Rapids flood risk study draft report available for public review and comment

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, in partnership with the City of Cedar Rapids, has completed the Cedar River, Cedar Rapids, Iowa Flood Risk Management Project Feasibility Report with Integrated Environmental Assessment, Public Review Draft. This document presents the evaluation of flood risk management alternatives for the City of Cedar Rapids.  The report is available for public review and comment for a 30-day period beginning Aug. 31 and ending Sept. 30, 2010.

The Draft Feasibility Report summarizes data collection activities, economic evaluations, benefit-cost ratios and net benefits for the array of flood risk management alternatives for the City, and identifies the tentatively selected Federally Supportable Plan.  Once the Draft Report has been reviewed it will form the basis of the Corps of Engineers’ recommendation to Congress regarding a flood risk management project for the City.  The Federally Supportable Plan includes construction of 3.15 miles of levees, flood walls and closure structures to protect properties on the east bank of the Cedar River.

Copies of the Cedar River, Cedar Rapids, Iowa Flood Risk Management Project Feasibility Study with Integrated Environmental Assessment, Public Review Draft are being mailed to individuals on the study’s mailing list.  Copies of the Draft Report can be obtained by contacting Ms. Marsha Dolan, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, by e-mail at marsha.g.dolan@usace.army.mil, or by phone at (309) 794-5648.  The Draft Report is also available at the Cedar Rapids Public Library and on the Corps’ Cedar Rapids study website http://www.mvr.usace.army.mil/PublicAffairsOffice/CedarRapids/CedarRapids.htm.  The Draft Report is also posted on the City’s web site.

A Public Meeting will be held at 6 p.m., September 21 in the Grand Ballroom of the Crowne Center Plaza Five Seasons Hotel at which time written comments on the report may be submitted.  If you are unable to attend this meeting, written comments on the Draft Report should be mailed to the attention of Mr. Lonn McGuire, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Clock Tower Building, P.O.
