Corps Cuts Lake Red Rock Outflows to Reduce Mississippi River Flood Stages

ROCK ISLAND, ILL. -- Recent heavy rainfall in the Upper Mississippi River basin continues to raise river levels along the Mississippi River. In an effort to reduce river stages and minimize impacts to Mississippi River communities downstream from the confluence of the Des Moines and Mississippi rivers, Lake Red Rock outflows are being reduced. By tomorrow, Wednesday, April 20, Lake Red Rock outflows will be reduced from approximately 19,600 to 5,000 cubic feet per second1 and the Lake will be begin to store water.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closing Mississippi River locks due to high water

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, is closing three locks on the Mississippi River due to high river levels. The closures are necessary as the Mississippi River overtops lock gates making the locks inoperable.

Melting ice makes Corps lakes unsafe

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – With late winter temperatures beginning to rise and fall, ice-covered areas on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ lakes are unsafe for winter activities. Thin, rotten ice and ice unsupported by lake waters can give way at any time. Venturing onto ice surfaces at Coralville Lake, Saylorville Lake and Lake Red Rock is extremely hazardous and is not recommended.

Army Corps updates Des Moines River flow data

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The results of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ nine-month study to enhance understanding of flooding on the Des Moines River at and below the Corps’ Saylorville Lake and Lake Red Rock reservoirs show that flood flow frequencies on the Des Moines River have increased.
