Agricultural Flood Risk in the Iowa-Cedar Basin (FPMS/Silver Jackets Pilot Project)

This pilot study builds upon previous pilot studies conducted by the Iowa Silver Jackets, the Corps and FSA. The previous pilots explored flood risk with a focus on structure losses. Results from those pilots demonstrated that type and location of conservation practices may have an impact on downstream flood stages and damages that may result from those flood stages. This pilot explores whether there are agricultural lands experiencing recurring agricultural damages that have land owner interest and federal interest in conversion to conservation easements. Conservation easements within floodplain areas are reported to reduce downstream flooding, improve water quality and provide habitat for wildlife.

Section 408 Program
