24th Annual Mississippi River Eco-Meet

Pleasant Valley, IA - October 18th

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Mississippi River Project will sponsor the 24th ANNUAL MISSISSIPPI RIVER ECO-MEET on October 18th.  This special event will be held at Locks and Dam #14 Day Use Recreation Area located at Pleasant Valley, Iowa.

An Eco-Meet is a team competition between area schools to promote the better use of our natural and cultural resources.  The meet is open to elementary schools in Scott, Rock Island and Henry Counties.  There are ten schools and thirteen teams that are participating this year from the following schools: Alan Shepard, Ed White, John Glenn, Neil Armstong and Virgil Grissom from the North Scott School District; Bettendorf Middle School from the Bettendorf School District, and Bridgeview, Cody, Riverdale Heights and Hopewell Elementary Schools from the Pleasant Valley School District.  Local businesses have donated items for the event as well, which includes K & K Hardware, Slagles Food Pride Grocery Store and Wise Guys Pizza.

Topics covered in the competition include "The Mississippi and It's Uses", "Water Safety”, “Animals Around Us” and “Forests Are More Than Just Trees.” For more information contact Steve Vacek at (309) 794-4301.

*Note:  In case of inclement weather, the Eco-Meet will move to the Bettendorf Community Center, located at 2204 Grant Street.  *Note:  Good photo opportunities would be from 9:30 – 10:20 a.m. and from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m., with awards given out at 2:00 p.m.
